Moving to California

We’re in the process of moving to California (as you probably figured). So far so good. We don’t have much stuff, so packing up is easy.

Hopefully we can move directly into an apartment out there, but we’ll see. So far, this is the plan:

  • Friday, November 26thUnited Van Lines is packing up our stuff.
  • Saturday, November 27th – Clean up of apartment and move-out inspection, start drive towards Clarksville. This web site goes down due to packing up the server.
  • Sunday, November 28th – Hand off Nalle to Jason, depart towards west.
  • Monday, November 29th to Friday, December 3rd – Drive via Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.
  • Saturday, December 4th – Move in to new apartment?
  • Sunday, December 5th – Web sites are back up?
  • Monday, December 6th – Start work at Yahoo!
  • Friday, December 17th – Jason flies to California with Nalle.

Yahoo!

In case you haven’t heard…

I am no longer with MySQL, and will be starting my new job as a MySQL Guru at Yahoo! on December 6th. If you want the details about why or how or when, feel free to ask me! (My email is jeremy [at] jcole [dot] us.)

Wish me luck!

Update: See what Jeremy Zawodny has to say about it: Jeremy Cole will be Yahooing Soon too!

Update: Mike Hillyer chimes in: Jeremy Cole is a Yahoo!

ZaAaP!

R.I.P. – Linksys WAP11 (Wireless Access Point) and Linksys BEFSR41 (EtherFast Cable/DSL Router). You’ve given many good days of service and I appreciate all your efforts. May you rest in peace.

Lightning seems to have hit something (our roof?) and killed a few small but important electronics. Still investigating, but everything else seems OK.

If you have any sites hosted on my servers, you will need to update your DNS (ask me) as the IP has changed to 69.81.137.61.

Update: The onboard Ethernet controller on my desktop machine can rest in peace as well. Now substituted by a trusty spare 3Com 3C905B I had laying around.

Update: A set of outlets on the kitchen island is also out.

Update: The outlet is fine, the GFCI outlet in the kitchen was on the same circuit and flipped. The TV, however, is very interesting colors.

JeremyZ’s Favorite Database?

This is kind of old news, but I wanted to put it in my blog anyway, as perhaps some of you haven’t seen it, and so I won’t lose it. :)

On June 15, 2004, LinuxWorld interviewed Jeremy Zawodny and Derek Balling regarding their new book, High Performance MySQL. They asked the following question:

LinuxWorld: You must have experienced lots of different databases of information over the years – what was your favorite use for a database system?

Jeremy Zawodny: That’s a tough one. I (Jeremy) really like the aviation database that Jeremy Cole (MySQL AB’s training manager) has been building. He’s combined freely available information from the FAA and NTSB with MySQL and a simple Web interface in a way that brings together previously separate and hard-to-find information. If you want to know which airports or airlines experience the most delays, it’ll tell you. If you want to know what types of planes American Eagle flies, it’ll tell you.

He is of course referring to my project, FlightStats.
